The year 1982 had just started, I was on my summer vacation in Praia do Imbé (Imbé Beach), north coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, when three friends knock at the door saying that they were in need of a licensed driver for their father's car so we all four could go to Canasvieiras in Florianópolis. None of the three had driver's license and their father had loaned the car in the condition that I would be the driver. I, an "experienced driver" with nearly two years of qualification, would be responsible for that safe ride to reach our destination. The 400 km(249 miles) to Canasvieiras went smoothly, despite the bad conditions of the roads BR-101 and SC-401, which, after all, made justice to my title of experienced driver.

Canasvieiras is a neighborhood/beach on the northern tip of the island of Santa Catarina  where Florianópolis is located. At the time, it was the liveliest and well known beach in the region; Jurerê Internacional, a close by beach, was nothing but an advertising sign for a housing development, a promise. Today Canasvieiras is shadowed in fame and sophistication by its neighbor which turned into reality.

As the exchange rate was very favorable to the Argentinians in the early 80's, Canasvieras was, without a doubt, the most Argentinian beach in Brazil. For every Brazilian two Argentinians were counted. Spanish was the official language on the streets. The price of any good ranged from expensive to too expensive for us Brazilians, a bargain for them. Even today the beach attracts many Argentinians, because they bought numerous properties by then, therefore they keep coming every year, despite the reversal on the exchange rate.

One thing which has not changed in Canasvieiras during these 30 years was its vocation to house and accommodate the crowd that invades the beach each new summer. There are a reasonable number of hotels, which along with inns, and seasonal rentals of houses and apartments easily meet demand.

This was my first of many other visits. We were staying at Hotel Canasvieiras, a beachfront hotel. Do not ask me why, but I kept myself singing all the time on the back of my head "Welcome to the Hotel Canasvieiras..." an allusion and a homage to the memorable Eagles' song "Hotel California". A register: "Hotel California" was recorded in 1976 and released in 1977, therefore it was not an oldie back to 1982.

Speaking of music, there was a Brazilian Sailing Championship and the entire production crew of the event was hosted there, official DJ included. On a sunny summer morning he played a song sang by British band Dire Straits called "Romeo & Juliet" that blew me up, because I could not believe I was there in Canasvieiras, across from that wonderful sea painted in all colors by the sailing boats and being introduced to a song that became part of the soundtrack of my life.

We do not realize right the way when one those moments happen, if that song will be recorded or not on the trail of our memories. Over time, if we are able to correlate the song with time and place, bringing back the exact feeling that touched us in so many years ago, we know for sure that it lies on the soundtrack. Sometimes we demand a lot from life, but life itself keeps reminding us how powerful simple moments are.

 Mal havia iniciado o ano de 1982, eu estava veraneando na Praia do Imbé, litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul, quando três amigos batem à porta da casa dizendo que precisavam de uma motorista para o carro do pai de dois deles para irmos os quatro para Canasvieiras em Florianópolis. Nenhum dos três tinha carteira para dirigir e o pai emprestara o carro na condição de que eu, “motorista experiente” com quase dois anos de habilitação, fosse o responsável pelo deslocamento em segurança até nosso destino. Os 400 km até Canasvieiras transcorreram sem sobressaltos, apesar das péssimas condições das rodovias BR-101 e SC-401, onde fiz jus ao título de motorista experiente.

Canasvieiras é um bairro/praia no extremo norte da ilha de Santa Catarina onde se localiza  Florianópolis.  À época, era a praia mais badalada e conhecida da região;  Jurerê Internacional, vizinha,  era uma placa de propaganda de um loteamento, uma promessa. Hoje Cansvieiras foi suplantada em fama e sofisticação pela vizinha que transformou-se em realidade.

Como a taxa de câmbio era extremamente favorável aos argentinos  no início dos anos 80, Canasvieras era, sem sombra de dúvidas, a praia mais argentina do Brasil. Para cada brasileiro havia dois argentinos. A língua oficial nas ruas era o espanhol. Os preços eram salgados para nós brasileiros e uma barganha para eles. Ainda hoje a praia atrai muitos argentinos , pois esses  compraram inúmeras propriedades naquele período e vêm todos os anos, apesar da inversão cambial.

O que não mudou em Canasvieiras nesses 30 anos foi a vocação da praia em receber e acomodar a multidão que a cada novo verão a invade. Há um número considerável de hotéis que, juntamente com pousadas, casas e apartamentos para alugar por temporada atendem com tranquilidade a demanda.

Esta era minha primera de outras tantas visitas. Iríamos nos hospedar no Hotel Canasvieiras, localizado em frente à praia. Não me pergunte o por quê, mas eu cantarolava o tempo todo em minha cabeça “Welcome to the Hotel Canasvieiras” numa alusão à clássica música “Hotel Califórnia” do grupo norte americano Eagles. Vale lembrar que a referida música fora gravada em 1976 e lançada em 1977 e, portanto, não tão clássica assim em 1982.

Falando em música, naquele ano houve um campeonato brasileiro de vela e toda equipe de produção do evento estava ali hospedada, inclusive o DJ oficial. Numa manhã ensolarada de verão ele colocou para tocar uma música do grupo inglês Dire Straits chamada “Romeo & Juliet” que me deixou extasiado, pois não acreditava que eu estava ali, em Canasvieiras, defronte aquele mar maravilhoso pintado em todas as cores pelas velas dos barcos e sendo apresentado a  uma música que ficou registrada como uma das que fazem parte da trilha sonora da minha vida.

Na hora em que acontecem estes momentos, não imaginamos se aquela música ficará gravada na trilha de nossas memórias, mas, com o passar do tempo, quando a associamos à época e ao local, conseguimos reproduzir exatamente o sentimento que aflorou em nós há tantos anos atrás. Às vezes exigimos muito da vida; ela vive a nos relembrar o poder dos momentos singelos.

São Sebastião's downtown is divided into two parts. In the historic center there are colonial-style houses, the magnificent ‘Convent our Lady of Perpetual Help’ church and other impressive buildings like the Franciscan Convent, Museum of Sacred Art and many more all surrounding the Mother Church. Then we have the new center by the sea, the resident's favorite promenade, where the Municipal Theatre and the craft fair are located. In both parts of the center there are bars & restaurants, ice cream parlors and many little stores. The population is approximately 80,000 people.

PRAIA DA PAÚBA (Paúba Beach)

If you are a surfer looking for the "perfect wave" come to Praia da Paúba when a good south wind is blowing. It will be difficult to get you out of the water on those days. Other days you will have to search for another beach because its crystal clear waters will be attended by families with children swimming in the amazingly calm ocean. Praia da Paúba retains the atmosphere of a fishing village and is very popular with fishing enthusiasts and water sport lovers. Praia da Paúba is 23 km (14 miles) away from downtown São Sebastião and has a reasonable number of hotels, kiosks, restaurants and vacation rental houses.

O centro da cidade de São Sebastião é, na realidade, dividido em duas partes: os vários casarões em  estilo colonial no centro antigo, que abriga no entorno da Igreja Matriz, prédios importantes como o Convento Franciscano, o Museu de Arte Sacra e o Convento de Nossa Senhora do Amparo, e o centro novo que está próximo ao mar onde localizam-se o Teatro Municipal e a feira de artesanato, sendo este o local de passeio preferido dos moradores. Nas duas partes do centro há vários bares, restaurantes, sorveterias e outros tipos de comércio.  A população é de aproximadamente 80.000 pessoas.

PRAIA DA PAÚBA

Se você é um surfista a procura da “onda perfeita” conheça a Praia da Paúba quando estiver soprando um bom vento sul. Difícil vai ser tirá-lo da água nestes dias. Nos outros dias, busque outra praia, pois as águas serão calmas e frequentada por pais que trazem seus filhos desfrutarem suas águas cristalinas. A praia conserva a atmosfera de uma vila de pescadores e é muito procurada pelos entusiastas da pesca e do mergulho e por praticantes dos esportes aquáticos. Dista 23 km do centro de São Sebastião e tem uma infraestrutura razoável com alguns hotéis, quiosques, restaurantes e casas para alugar por temporada.
